1. Developing an Illustration Project at The University of Edinburgh
This course is designed for students who wish to create an ambitious personal illustration project. Students can adapt a written a story or series of poems to develop these into an involved illustration project or a non-narrative series of images and ideas which can be visualized further into a series or a book. This course will provide the support for students to discuss and test out ideas using a range of traditional and non-traditional techniques, methods and concepts.
Pre-requisites for enrolment
Materials and equipment provided for students as part of the course and included in course fee:
- Studio with
- Cutting mats
- Access to light box
- Access to scanners and computers
Essentials Materials and equipment students will need to provide themselves: (Estimated cost: £20 – £50 depending on usage)
- an A4-sized sketchbook
- 2B, 4B and 6B pencils
- a dipping pen and a drawing nib (mapping nib is ideal)
- black ink ( this can be Indian ink or acrylic ink)
- a selection of cheap watercolour brushes
- a few sheets of A2 or A1 heavy or light-weight cartridge paper according to student preference.
- a selection of drawing materials such as fine-liners, watercolours, acrylics or colour pencils depending on individual projects.
- craft knife, masking tape, putty rubber and a ruler.
Additional recommended materials and equipment students can provide:
- Digital camera
- Mount board for presentation
Content of Course
The course will comprise of an intensive 5 day teaching block followed by a period of independent and directed study in the students own time.
Day 1 – Observational drawing and Ideas
Day 2 – Research methodologies and developing ideas
Day 3 – Character development and Sequential imagery
Day 4 – Final illustrations
Day 5 – Final illustrations and crit
Directed and Independent study:
Students will be required to follow up and reflect on their learning from the classes through the completion of directed projects and their own independent study.

London – Milan the Dual City Summer Sessions with Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Art and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA)
It could never be denied that London and Milan are synonymous with great art and design. When people talk of cities that have generated the most famous creative people and most innovative work you can be sure that London and Milan appear at the top of the list. Both cities have some of the most exceptional interiors and architecture, graphic and product design studios and headquarters of some of the top design companies.
Interior Design Advanced (at Chelsea College)
This course has been designed to equip students with professional Interior Design Skills. Students will work within a challenging environment to develop their design processes from initial concept, through to technical drawing and model making; ending with the presentation of a professionally realised project. Research will be undertaken through visits to some of the cities finest examples of commercial design.
Cultural Tours – The Best in Design (at Chelsea College)
This course will reveal the hidden treasures within each city, illustrating the creation of successful design. Accompanied by expert art historians you will take a journey through history as you examine the cultural, social, artistic and industrial influences which have informed design throughout the ages. Visits will range from sites of national heritage to museums and galleries, complimented by engaging lectures, presentations and drawing exercises. A must for anyone pursuing studies in Art and Design.
