TIP #2:  Buy original and buy the best you can afford right now!  Perhaps you are inspired by an “up and coming” artist.  Buy it.  Don’t worry about the investment just buy if you enjoy the way the work makes you FEEL!  As you move through time and your discretionary fund pool increases, perhaps you can invest in something considered more valuable or be able to purchase a piece by a well-known favorite artist. Value is relative and if you love the work, it will possess value for you!  In addition, an eclectic mix will make your collection unique and personal.

TIP #3 Don’t be afraid to mix in some “filler pieces.”  Many catalogs and big box stores such as Home Goods and even web-based sites like artfulhoome.com offer mass-produced pieces that will still be interesting and beautiful.

TIP #4  Mix it up!  It is like a great suit—you spend on the staples for your wardrobe and you have some great jewelry or a fine watch.  Then you can add in the costume pieces.   Same goes for your art–as long as you pair less expensive elements with other more unique items in your collection, mix the mediums and categories, your art collection will be fabulous!
